SYNOPSIS

Murder, intrigue, and a would-be amateur sleuth.

Eliza Thomson Investigates…

March 1900: An early morning visitor disturbs the peace at the London townhouse of Dr Archie Thomson and his wife, Eliza.

But his identity, and the reason for his visit, remain unknown as he mumbles a few cryptic words and promptly drops dead!

What did he mean?

And who wrote the mysterious note they find in his pocket?

Excited to embark on some amateur sleuthing, Eliza Thomson takes her friend Connie on a trip across London searching for clues. But when they get a little too close to the truth, things threaten to get deadly…

An unexpected visitor arrives on my doorstep, muttering a few cryptic words before he drops dead. Who was he, and what was he trying to tell us?

With only a mysterious note as a clue, my friend Connie and I set off across London looking for an answer.

But when we get too close to the truth, the danger becomes all too real.

Chapter One Look Inside

A broad smile crossed Eliza Thomson’s lips as she peered through the drawing room window into the street below. The lamplighters were nowhere to be seen, but the paperboy was here already. Reading the newspaper with her afternoon cup of tea was her favourite time of the day but today she wouldn’t have much time to herself. Those extra twenty minutes would make all the difference.

She hurried down the stairs to the hallway and retrieved the paper from the letterbox before glancing at the front page. More news about the Boer War. She shook her head. Why had they needed a second war? They should have sorted it out first time around. She hurried back up the stairs and settled into her favourite leather armchair before scanning the newspaper for details of the Battersea murder. Surely the police must have worked out by now that someone had poisoned the victim.

She was so engrossed in her search she didn’t notice the door open and her husband Archie walk in.

“You’re not reading about murders again, are you?”

Eliza glanced up and smiled at the muscular figure of her husband with his greying hair and moustache. “What are you doing home so early?”

“Dr Shaw said I could finish early, and I wasn’t going to argue.” Archie’s soft Scottish accent filled the room as he nodded at the newspaper.

“What is it now?”
Eliza sighed. “The Battersea murder. I wrote to the inspector leading the case a couple of weeks ago suggesting the death was the result of poisoning but so far it hasn’t been reported. They say they’re still looking for the murder weapon.” She shook her head. “They’ve no chance of finding it.”
