Chapter One Look Inside
Chapter One Look Inside
Aldridge, near Birmingham, England. August 1843
Charles feared that the next time he fell asleep would be the last. His body ached and an overwhelming fatigue had settled on him. Until a few days ago, he thought he was getting better. Then the fever started, and now he wasn’t so sure.
He wasn’t afraid of dying but wished the prospect hadn’t come upon him so quickly. He was only twenty-three years old. There was still so much to look forward to, so many things he wanted to do, but he suspected they were beyond him now. As he fought the urge to close his eyes, he looked around the room he’d been confined to for the last month. Not that there was much to see. Other than the double bed he occupied there was only a dresser with a jug and wash bowl sat on top, and a wooden dining chair to his left. Nothing hung from the whitewashed walls. Unusually, the chair was empty. He’d been asleep, so the family must have thought they could slip away. He prayed the next person he saw would be Mary.
The coughing started again without warning and he thought it would split his chest in two. It sapped what little energy he had left, but had the effect of bringing his sister into the room. Louisa was four years older than him, and alongside Mary had been his principal nurse over these last few weeks.
“That’s it, cough it all out,” Louisa said as she arranged his pillows. “We need to get you breathing again. I’ve opened your window and the front door to get a draught through; that should help.”
“M-Mary…” Charles said.
“She’ll be here soon. She’s outside with William at the moment. Lie still and rest. I’ll sit with you until she arrives.”
Charles shivered as a warm breeze crossed over him, but didn’t have the energy to pull the blanket higher. Instead, he closed his eyes and tried to focus on breathing.
