SYNOPSIS

The summer village fete, a newly erected marquee and a missing tent peg.

Eliza Thomson Investigates…

August 1905: Recently home from their trip to Brighton, Eliza and Connie are deep in preparation for the local village fete.

Half the villagers are involved too, and once the marquee is assembled, it soon fills up with eager stall holders.

With the competition prizes awarded, the afternoon is almost at an end, but everything stops when a body is found hidden amongst the debris. Dead!

With more visitors to the village than usual, and a victim with more enemies than friends, the list of murder suspects is long. But a chance meeting in the local pub may narrow the field.

Eliza and Connie are keen to help the police with their enquiries, but when Inspector Adams arrives from New Scotland Yard, he clearly has something else on his mind. Can Eliza use her diplomatic skills to make sure the killer is found while keeping the peace at the police station?

The village fete should have been a fun day for all, but the discovery of a body hidden in the marquee ruins the festivities.

With half the village involved in the event, the list of suspects is long.

When the regular Scotland Yard inspector arrives with his own agenda, I know I’ll need to tread carefully to find the killer—and keep the peace.

Chapter One Look Inside

Connie Appleton stood at her small dining table beating a cake mixture as her friend and neighbour Eliza Thomson let herself in. She stopped as Eliza approached.

“Here you are. I was beginning to think you weren’t coming.”

Eliza grimaced. “I’m sorry, the time ran away with me. Archie was complaining that Mr Hewitt doesn’t trust him to judge the vegetable competitions, and before he’d finished, Henry arrived home and wanted to chat. I couldn’t walk out on him.”

“I should think not, given all those times he’s been here and hasn’t wanted to talk. Did you tell him about Dr Shaw’s death?”

“How did you guess?” Eliza sat down at the table and pulled a bag of paper squares from her handbag. “Apparently, Henry spent time on his ward when he was training in children’s medicine, so was keen to hear the details.”

“He knew him? Gracious. What a small world.”
