SYNOPSIS

A family divided … with no signs of reconciliation. Will Lydia rue the day she ever met them?

Keen to get away from her abusive father, Lydia happily accepts the post of housekeeper at the Jackson family home.

But when William senses romance in the air between Lydia and his son William-Wetherby, he is determined to put an end to it.

For good.

As a feud erupts between father and son, Mr Wetherby is still furious about Harriet’s betrayal.

And he’s going to make sure someone pays…

Lydia

I thought working for the Jacksons would be my escape. I never expected to find myself caught in a family feud.

When I took the housekeeper job, I saw it as a chance to get away from my father.

Unfortunately, William-Wetherby doesn’t approve of the growing affection his father has for me, but I see him as my best hope for the future.

As tensions erupt, I find myself caught between loyalty and survival. William-Wetherby isn’t done though—he’s determined someone will pay for what they’ve done to us.

Inspired by a true story, Only One Winner continues an epic saga of one family’s trials, tragedies, and triumphs as they seek their fortune in Victorian-era England.

Chapter One Look Inside

Handsworth, Staffordshire, England. September 1885

The Old Crown Inn was a cold and dreary place, particularly after dark, but William-Wetherby didn’t notice. He sat alone in a corner of the bar, a blanket pulled tightly around his shoulders and his head resting against the wall. His attention was focussed on a cobweb hanging from the ceiling and he couldn’t look away. To do that would let the images of his mother flood back into his mind.

He was roused from his trance by a police constable shaking his arm. “Your father’s here.” He nodded towards the door and William-Wetherby followed his gaze to see a man he barely recognised. His dark beard appeared too big for his sunken face and the once proud, upstanding stature seemed inches shorter as he shuffled forward with his shoulders hunched. William-Wetherby struggled from his seat and limped to help his father into a chair. Once they were both settled, he averted his gaze from the dark watery eyes staring at him.

“She’s gone,” his father said.

“I know. I’m sorry, I did everything I could.”

“You saw her in the water?”

William-Wetherby pulled the still wet fabric of his trousers. “I jumped in to try and save her, but …” His sobs echoed around the empty room. “There she was … floating in the water … I heard her splashing before I saw her.” He wiped his eyes on his jacket sleeve. “If only I hadn’t twisted my ankle, I might have been able to save her …” He covered his face with his hands. “It’s all my fault.”

The police constable put two brandies on the table in front of them.

“The doctor asked me to give you these.”

William waited for the constable to leave them. “Of course it wasn’t your fault. You can’t blame yourself. What was she doing at Tower Hill?”

William-Wetherby shook his head. “What was Mr Wetherby doing at Tower Hill?”

“Mr Wetherby was there?”
