SYNOPSIS

A maze, blackmail, and murder.

Eliza Thomson Investigates…

July 1903: The villagers of Moreton-on-Thames are on a day trip to Hampton Court Palace, the former home of King Henry VIII. With so much to see, their itinerary is full, but when they discover a dead body, their plans have to wait.

As Sergeant Cooper takes charge of the early investigation, Eliza and Connie begin their own search for the killer. But with the identity of the victim a mystery, their task looks impossible.

With witnesses and suspects determined to mislead, they soon find they have more questions than answers. Can they uncover the killer’s secret before someone else gets hurt?

A day trip to Hampton Court Palace turns deadly when a body is discovered in the maze.

With the identity of the victim unknown and witnesses unwilling to cooperate, the investigation seems hopeless.

But Connie and I won’t be deterred. We’ll uncover the killer’s secret—even if it means putting ourselves at risk.

If you like Miss Marple-style murder mysteries and historical women with attitude, you’ll love this historical British series.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “I have yet to be able to work out who that is before Eliza does, which is unusual for me in most cosy murder mysteries, but I enjoy the challenge.”- Amazon Reviewer

Chapter One Look Inside

Sergeant Cooper was nowhere to be seen. Eliza shifted her position in the dining room window and peered into the front garden of her friend Connie Appleton. No, he mustn’t have arrived. Unless he was early and had gone inside … but he wouldn’t do that. Not yet.

“What are you doing?” Eliza’s husband Archie glanced up from his morning newspaper as she pressed her head against the glass.

“I want to know if Sergeant Cooper’s arrived at Connie’s yet.”

“Why should that concern you?”

Eliza spluttered as she turned to face the room. “Why do you think? They’re walking out with each other today, for the first time.”

Archie folded up the paper and placed it on the table. “I thought they’d been walking out together for months.”

Eliza placed her hands on her hips. “Not officially. Today’s a big day for Connie, especially with it being a church outing.”

“That still doesn’t explain why you’re so keen to see him.”

“Archie, my dear fellow–” Mr Bell, Eliza’s father, winked at her “–how many years ago did you marry my daughter? You should be well aware she likes to know what’s going on.”

“Exactly.” Eliza nodded. “Besides, Connie was rather anxious about the whole thing yesterday; I don’t want her to be alone when Sergeant Cooper arrives.”
